This is really a treat for Bird watchers basically with some wildlife, who get to see some of the rarest equatorial birds in the rainforests here like the Red faced Malkoha, Sri Lanka hanging parrot, and if lucky the green billed Coucal. One of the rarest is the Srilankan frogmouth which is can be only found in the Singaraja rainforest. The Udawalwe national park is home to herds of Elephants & again some dryzone birds including the Malabar pied Hornbill (found only in the sub continent) and the Coppersmith Barbet. Thus it is rare to have different species of Rainforest, dry zone & water birds in driving distance of a few hours. Some ther rare species are whistling thrush, Srilankan wood pigeon & the Oriental Dwarf Kingfisher.
If the Yala national park is famous for its leopards, then it is a treat to see the nursery herds of Elephants at Udawalwe.
